In
this classic Lesotho trek, you experience some of the most breathtaking mountain
scenery in the world. The trek
takes you across a range of mountains that form the first frontier dividing the
low landers from the high land people of Lesotho.
Following an ingenious network of cleverly built stone highways, you
travel to the engineering wonder of Africa, the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
The dam has forced the two worlds of low and high land peopleto meet at
the summit of the little town of Katse. You
explore the Maluti, an exhilarating range of steep valleys, clear mountain
streams, bilhazzia free rivers and pools where the Mountain and Grey Buck roam
free on the green slopes of this amazing ecosystem. Life
in these mountains has changed little. Friendly
Sesotho speaking indigenous people scattered throughout these high green valleys
nurture their herds, till the soil and pass on their survival knowledge down the
generations. Locked in a rhythmic
change of seasons they live their lives in a simple way that leaves you
believing in humans' potential in striking the perfect balance between their
survival and the ecological system around them. We
begin the trip in Maseru the westernised capital of Lesotho, located on the border
with South Africa. The buzzing
markets introduce you to the smiling peace loving people of Lesotho.
We travel on road to the villages on the foothills and spend an evening
there markingour departure into the hidden secrets of the Mountain people.
A climb up the Mosalemane pass (2800m) rewinds the history tape and you
find yourself surrounded by an untouched, unoccupied expanse of beauty and
nature. This will stir your
adventurous spirits as you watch clouds sour peacefully above your head sending
you reeling with excitement and wonder. We
lodge in small mud houses hosted by mountain families or we camp near clear
water streams and rivers on the way to the Katse Dam.
A final descent down along the valleys on the ancient trails takes you to
Katse Lodge nestled meters above the spectacular Katse Dam, this is where you
freshen up for the second leg of your trip into South Africa.
Visit this tiny Kingdom and experience the friendliness of its people. Many options exist and we will gladly design a tour to meet your needs. more information |
